Advances in oncology and cancer treatments have allowed to drastically improve the patient recovery prognosis. However, the therapies used to battle the disease often imply an irreversible damage to their reproductive potential due to which an increase in demand
for fertility preservation has gradually emerged in the society. Cryopreservation has been historically used as a first line approach in fertility preservation for women, but initially this option was limited to embryos. Major advancements achieved in the past few years in the protocols for oocyte cryopreservation have opened a window of hope to women who wish to preserve their fertility potential either for social or oncologic reasons. The aim of this review is to provide current knowledge on oocyte cryopreservation being focused
on vitrification as a standardized, simple, reproducible, and efficient option.
