Signalling pathways in primordial follicle activation in vitro and in vivo

Primordial follicles of mammalian ovary represent a finite reserve that is continuously depleted until menopause. In girls, during the reproductive lifespan, among 1-2 millions primordial follicles present at birth, only around 400 will grow until ovulation giving rise to
mature metaphase II oocytes. Increased knowledge of signalling pathways that promote primordial follicles activation and growth is being currently applied in vitro and in vivo to exploit the ovarian reserve for production of mature oocytes. Main aim of this study is to briefly review the pathways involved in primordial follicle activation and their possible applications in vivo and in vitro.
